Legal interruption of pregnancy in Mexico: how to do it?

The voluntary interruption of pregnancy (IVE) is a practice that, to this day, is still not legal in many parts of the world.

Specifically, in the Central American country of Mexico, abortion is only legal in its capital: Mexico City. This is true since the adoption of the law on decriminalization of abortion at the request of women until twelve weeks of pregnancy.

The rest of the states of the Mexican Republic have their own laws, which consider that abortion is a crime, unless certain conditions included in the Penal Code are met.

Law on the decriminalization of abortion

On April 24, 2007, the law that allows Mexican women to freely abort was approved in Mexico City, as long as it takes place before week 12 of pregnancy.

After this time, that is, once entered into the second trimester of pregnancy, the woman may abort in these 3 cases:

  • Pregnancy is the result of a rape
  • Pregnancy puts women's lives in serious danger
  • Pregnancy can cause serious physical and / or psychological damage to women

As we have said, this is only contemplated for the capital of the country, Mexico City. However, it is not necessary that the woman was born in the Federal District to go to an abortion.

The legal interruption of pregnancy (ILE) in Mexico will only be applied in people over 18 years of age. In case of being a minor, the written consent of the parents will be necessary or accompanied by one of them at the time of requesting the abortion.





How is it aborted in a clinic?

The technique to interrupt a pregnancy basically depends on the time of gestation: with drugs or through a surgical intervention.

The most important thing is for the woman to go to a specialized clinic to practice the IVE in a safe way, follow all the recommendations of the doctors and go to the controls that are necessary.

Yes. In case of living in a state where abortion is penalized, the woman can travel to Mexico City to terminate the pregnancy legally and safely. Women residing abroad can also go to the capital of Mexico. The only condition to abort freely is that the pregnancy does not exceed 12 weeks.
