What is ovodonation and what is the price of treatment?

Ovulation or donation of eggs is an altruistic act in which a young and healthy woman decides to donate part of the eggs to an assisted reproduction clinic or egg bank so that other women or couples with problems of female fertility can use them and achieve the desired pregnancy. The reproductive technique used when donor eggs are used is in vitro fertilization (IVF).

IVF with donor eggs is a good solution not only for infertile women but also for those with poor egg quality or low ovarian reserve due to age. It is also the alternative chosen by many women whose eggs have genetic alterations susceptible of being inherited by the offspring.

Next you have an index with all the points that we are going to treat in this article.

What is ovodonation and what is the price of treatment?

When we talk about ovodonation , we must refer to two parts or treatments. We can say that it is an IVF process divided in two:

  • The egg donor: will undergo ovarian stimulation and follicular puncture to obtain their eggs.
  • The recipient: is the woman who seeks pregnancy. Its treatment is based on the preparation of the uterine cavity so that the transfer of embryos is effective and allows the pregnancy. As we explain in this article " the recipient, " ovodonation is an emotionally complicated process.

Here we explain the details of both treatments.

The egg donor

For a girl to donate her eggs must meet the following requirements:

  • Be between 18 and 35 years old.
  • Having a normal ovulatory function.
  • Do not suffer malformations, genetic diseases or congenital or hereditary (close relatives can not suffer from these diseases).
  • The donor can not be adopted, since it is imperative to know the medical history of their close relatives.
  • Be physically and mentally healthy.
  • Not having given birth to more than 6 children.

You can read more details about the requirements demanded in the following article: Requirements to donate eggs.

On the other hand, the ovodonante must be clear that the donation of ovules is a voluntary, altruistic and anonymous act. At no time will you know the recipient woman or couple or the child as a result of the donation. The choice of the donor is made by the fertility clinic.

Egg donation is altruistic and anonymous

Although the sale of eggs is prohibited in Spain, donors receive an economic compensation of between 800 and 1000 ?. This amount is fixed by the Ministry of Health and is awarded not for the donated eggs but for the possible risks and expenses derived from the donation process. The following article talks more extensively about the financial compensation for egg donation.

Obtaining eggs

The process through which the donor passes consists of the following main phases:

  • Medical tests (psychological and gynecological) to verify that the candidate meets the requirements and is prepared physically and emotionally for the donation.
  • Signature of consents.
  • Ovarian stimulation: the donor must self-administer hormonal medication to stimulate the production and maturation of a greater number of eggs. This treatment lasts between 6 and 10 days, and during this time the donor should go to the doctor's appointments every two days to study ovarian growth and determine the best day for the removal of the eggs.
  • Follicular puncture: is the surgical procedure by which the donor passes to obtain the eggs. It is simple, it is performed under anesthesia and lasts for about 30 minutes. It does not require hospitalization so that the same day, a few hours after the puncture, the donor will be able to return home and follow his usual routine.

Approximately two weeks after the puncture, the donor will again have the rule, which will mark the end of the donation cycle and the start of the new menstrual cycle.

You can consult the complete process here: ovodonación step by step.

Most egg donors report the ovulation process as a positive experience because the risks are few and the satisfaction of helping other women is very great.

Remember that you can obtain more information about the donation in this specific web on the subject: Donation of ovules.

Pregnancy by ovodonation

When a woman seeks pregnancy through ovodonation, the following steps are followed:

  • Fertilization: Donor eggs are fertilized with sperm from the prospective parent or from an anonymous donor. Fertilization can be performed innovatively or through ICSI.
  • Endometrial preparation: the recipient will administer hormonal medication (estrogens and progesterone) via oral, vaginal or patches. These drugs aim to make your endometrium acquire the optimal appearance for the implantation of the embryos. This treatment will last about 10 days and require ultrasound controls.
  • Embryo Transfer: When the transvaginal ultrasound examiner checks that the endometrium has a trilaminar aspect and a thickness of 7 to 10 mm, embryo transfer occurs. It is generally performed without anesthesia, as it is a simple and painless procedure in which the embryos are deposited in the uterine cavity waiting for them to implant and begin the pregnancy. It does not require rest or special care.
  • Pregnancy test: Approximately two weeks after the transfer, the patient can perform a pregnancy test to confirm the success or failure of ovulation technique.

Finally, it is important to emphasize that in case of pregnancy, it will not be different from any other pregnancy achieved naturally or through another treatment of assisted reproduction. If you want more information about it, I recommend you consult this article: Pregnancy by ovodonación.

The egg bank

Donor eggs can be used fresh or frozen. If ovodonation is fresh, it will be necessary to synchronize the cycles of the donor and recipient. Otherwise, after obtaining the eggs, they are frozen until the moment of fertilization, when they will proceed to thaw.

A fertility clinic can rely on its own donors (own egg bank) or on the contrary, work in coordination with an external egg bank.

An egg bank is a department responsible for the procurement, evaluation and subsequent distribution of egg donors. Due to their activity, egg banks have a wide and varied database of donors. For this reason, they can respond to almost any demand from clinics.

This allows the reproductive centers to be able to offer the ovodonación treatment almost immediately, since it is rare to find a compatible donor in the egg bank.

Price

The cost of IVF when using donor eggs is higher than the cost of IVF with own eggs since it is necessary to cover donor expenses such as medical tests that will be done, financial compensation received, medication for the stimulation or costs of ovarian puncture.

The price of IVF with egg donation

The approximate price of ovodonación is between 4500 and 9000 ? compared to the ? 2800-5500 usually costing IVF.

In this value is often not included the medication of the endometrial preparation that the recipient should buy at the pharmacy. The cost of this medication is usually between 200 and 300 ?.

We must take into account that these are approximate prices, because there is much variation depending on the clinic of assisted reproduction where the process is carried out and the specific characteristics of each situation.

There is a way to reduce the cost of the process. It is known as a shared donation. It consists of dividing the eggs obtained from the same donor into two or more recipients. Thus, if in a normal ovodonation process, each recipient receives between 8 and 12 ovules approximately, in cases of shared donation, are adjudged between 3 and 6 ovules more or less.

The cost of shared ovodonation is between ? 2500 and ? 5000. You have more information about this type of donation here: Shared donation.

Results and percentage of success

The quality and quantity of eggs diminishes as the woman's age increases, thus diminishing her reproductive potential. This decline in female fertility is accentuated from the age of 35 and is especially pronounced from the age of 40. Therefore, the use of donor eggs improves the probability of pregnancy, especially in cases of advanced maternal age.

According to data from the study carried out by SEF (Spanish Fertility Society) in 2014, in cases of fresh ovodonation, the percentage of pregnancy per transfer in a cycle of egg donation is 55.9% and the rate of delivery is say, newborn at home for each transfer is 36.4%.

If egg ovulation is frozen eggs, the percentages are 39.7% and 24.7%, respectively. The decrease in success rates is mainly due to the fact that ovarian freezing can affect the quality of the eggs. However, the cryopreservation process used, vitrification, has survival rates close to 99%.

User questions

Can you donate eggs and sperm at the same time?

Yes, it is what is known as double donation. It is about performing an IVF process using both eggs and sperm from donors and not from prospective parents.

You can get more information here: double donation.

What is the number of attempts to achieve success?

There is no fixed number of recommended ovodonation attempts. It will depend on the characteristics of each infertility situation. There are couples who try it numerous times and who throw the towel after two or three ovodonación processes.

How many times can a woman donate her eggs?

According to the Spanish Law on Assisted Reproduction, a woman can donate as many times as she wants until she obtains, through her eggs, 6 live newborns in Spain.

Can you do the ovodonación by the Social Security?

Yes, there are numerous public assisted reproductive units that offer IVF treatment with egg donation. However, the requirements in the public system compel many women and couples to resort to private clinics. Some examples are: being under 40 or not having children.

How does epigenetics affect egg donation?

Epigenetics refers to the changes that can occur in the expression of genes caused by environmental factors. Therefore, although in ovodonation cases the genetic endowment of the embryo comes from the egg donor, during gestation, the maternal environment can influence the expression of these genes.

What are the risks of donating eggs to ovodonants?

The risks that may arise from the donation process arise mainly as a result of ovarian stimulation and follicular puncture. Although occurring in a timely manner and can be avoided, poorly controlled hormone stimulation may result in ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS).

On the other hand, follicular puncture, although simple, is an operation performed under anesthesia and therefore not completely free of risks.

If you want more information about this you can consult this article: Risks of ovodonación.
