The child's uterus: causes, diagnosis and possibility of pregnancy

The uterus or infantile matrix is ??a uterine malformation that consists in the insufficient development of the reproductive organ in charge of gestating: the uterus.

This alteration is also known as hypoplasia uterine or hypoplastic uterus due to the lack of maturity it presents.

Despite the smaller size of the uterus, these women do not always have infertility and some can carry out a pregnancy without problems.

Below you have an index with all the points that we will discuss in this article.

The infant uterus: causes, diagnosis and possibility of pregnancy

How is the hypoplastic uterus?

The approximate measurements of the normal uterus in an adult woman are 7 cm x 5 cm x 3 cm, although there are variations if the woman has already given birth.

The pathology of the infantile matrix will be more or less serious depending on the moment in which the uterus stopped growing and its measures. We can differentiate the following types:

Fetal uterus also called embryonic hypoplasia. The growth of the uterus stops right after birth and, therefore, its measurements do not reach 4 cm. Women with such small uteri present amenorrhea and infertility, as they will not be able to maintain a pregnancy. Infant or adolescent child growth of the uterus stops in childhood and can reach about 5 cm. In this case, it is possible to conceive, but pregnancy will be considered high risk because of the high probability of abortion and premature delivery.

Occasionally, the growth of the ovaries and fallopian tubes may also be affected and present a smaller size. Also, the vagina is usually shallow and with less elastic walls.

Causes

The poor development of the uterus and its lack of maturity can have several causes, although the most common are child malnutrition and fetal malformations.

Next, we will list all the possible causes that give rise to a child's matrix:

  • Malnutrition throughout a woman's life
  • Malformation of the fetus in the womb
  • Family background
  • Miscarriages that deform the uterus
  • Infections, toxic or traumatisms in the uterus
  • Tumors of the hypothalamus or pituitary, or even of the ovaries
  • Great efforts at an early age: girls athletes
  • Chronic infectious diseases
  • Alcohol, tobacco and other drugs

In addition to the immaturity of the uterus, there are other uterine alterations that can affect female fertility. If you are interested in knowing them in detail, you can continue reading here: Uterine malformations in women.

Diagnosis

When a woman reaches puberty, about 11-13 years old, her reproductive organs reach maturity and begin to function. At this time, secondary sexual characteristics appear, including the first menstruation (menarche).

If menstrual bleeding does not appear characteristic in adolescent girls or if it arrives late, over 16 years, it is possible that there is some alteration in the reproductive or endocrine system.

The main symptom of uterine hypoplasia is the absence of menstruation (amenorrhea), although some women do have irregular and painful periods.

At the first gynecological visit, measurements of the uterus will be taken by ultrasound, in addition to a hormonal analysis. With both results, it can be diagnosed if a woman presents an infantile or immature uterus.

In other cases, uterine hypoplasia is discovered later, when the woman is not able to conceive or presents with recurrent abortions.

The gynecologist can also assess the possibility of performing a hysteroscopy in order to observe the uterine interior and make a more conclusive diagnosis.
