Vitamin E and fertility

It is related to fertility since its lack in women can cause alterations in menstrual cycles and increase the risk of abortion. In man, it is related to the mobility of the sperm and, therefore, to its capacity for fertilization.

Contraceptives reduce the blood concentration of vitamin E so it is recommended the supplement of this vitamin and other antioxidants to improve fertility in case you are looking for a pregnancy.

Studies on vitamin E

There are several studies with animals that confirm the benefits of vitamin E in fertility, but the results in humans are inconclusive.

At the Miasonneuve-Rosemont Research Center in Montreal (Canada) and at the University of Panjab in India, the effect of vitamin E on the seminal quality of humans has been evaluated and in both cases it has been concluded that it improves the mobility of sperm and the quality of semen. These results are not conclusive due to the low number of participants in the study.

On the other hand, its supplementation during pregnancy is considered dangerous since, being a fat-soluble vitamin, it can accumulate in the organism and negatively affect the fetus. However, some authors recommend vitamin E and other antioxidants to prevent preeclampsia, although this is quite controversial.

recommendations

Vitamin E supplementation before pregnancy is recommended to increase antioxidant intake, but it is not advisable to take a very high dose during pregnancy without first consulting the specialist. In the case of men, it could be useful to improve the seminal quality.

Some foods rich in vitamin E are wheat germ, sunflower oil, almonds, hazelnuts, coconut, soy and rice.
