Anovulation

During the normal menstrual cycle of the woman, the release of a mature egg that can be fertilized by the sperm is produced. When the ovary is unable to expel said ovum a disorder is produced that is known as anovulation, that is, the absence of ovulation.

Anovulation

Anovulation can be circumstantial or chronic. The lack of ovulation persists over time is considered one of the important causes of female infertility , so it is a frequent reason to attend a fertility consultation.

Ovulation problems

Anovulation involves the absence of viable oocytes, which can be produced by an alteration at some point in the woman's menstrual cycle.

Another cause of female sterility related to ovulation is disovulation, which consists of an ineffective ovulation, that is, the ovule is not fertilizable.

Fortunately, there are currently different treatments that correct this type of disorders.

Causes

The triggers of this alteration can be of a different nature, since they have to do with lifestyle or with certain hormonal imbalances. Some of these causes are:

  • Excessive physical exercise practice.
  • Loss and weight gain: it is because leptin levels regulate those of the hypothalamic hormones. The most extreme cases are included, such as anorexia or bulimia.
  • Breastfeeding period: the creation of prolactin that occurs during the lactation period blocks ovarian activity, which usually produces an absence of menstruation during the months that this episode lasts.
  • Systemic diseases, such as chronic liver diseases or chronic renal failure.
  • Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS)
  • Hyperprolactinemia: alters the secretion of hypothalamic hormones.
  • Stress.

However, it can be caused by other types of problems, including primary or secondary ovarian failure, hypothalamic or thyroid dysfunction, and amenorrhea.

symptom

It can manifest itself in different ways, but the main symptom is the absence of menstruation. If this occurs regularly anovulation can go unnoticed until you try to get pregnant.

Medication to stimulate ovulation

Among the most common symptoms are amenorrhea, irregular menstrual cycles and abnormal bleeding. Other signs that can make you suspect an absence of ovulation are the absence of premenstrual syndrome and pain or swelling in the breasts.

If the basal temperature is irregular it can be indicative of lack of ovulation.

Diagnosis

Specialists can use different methods to diagnose anovulation such as a blood test, pelvic exams or ultrasound tests and apply different treatments depending on the causes of this disorder.

It can also be detected by other techniques such as measuring the basal body temperature (BBT), which in the case of ovulation is slightly increased in the middle of the cycle, or observing the mucus of the elastic cervix.

The purpose of all these tests is to reach the conclusion that there is an absence of ovulation in women.
