Success rates with oocyte donation: what is the probability of pregnancy?

Ovodonation or donation of ovules is one of the assisted reproduction treatments with the best success rates. Thanks to her, many women manage to become mothers when they could not achieve it with their own eggs.

The chances of achieving pregnancy with this technique are higher because the ovules come from young and healthy women, so they are better quality oocytes. This makes it easier to get pregnant the first time.

Below you have an index with all the points that we will discuss in this article.

Success rates with oocyte donation: What is the probability of pregnancy?

Who uses oocyte donation?

There are several causes why women choose to donate eggs to be mothers:

  • Failure in IVF cycles with ovules: the low response to ovarian stimulation, the poor quality of the ovules and / or embryos (as in the case of patients with endometriosis), the failure of fertilization and / or implantation or repeated abortions are the main reasons why pregnancy may not be achieved in an IVF treatment.
  • Genetic alteration: if it is susceptible to be inherited by offspring and can not be detected by preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD).
  • Low reserve or no ovarian function: either by a primary ovarian failure, a premature ovarian failure, menopause or ovarian surgery.
  • Old age: over the years, the number and quality of the ovules decreases. From the age of 35, it may be necessary to resort to ovodonation because the chromosomal alterations are more frequent and compromise the viability of the embryos.
Causes to resort to oocyte donation

Either due to the absence of ovules or due to poor quality, when a woman can not get pregnant with her own eggs, she can resort to an in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment with ovodonation to reach motherhood.

The egg donors are young and healthy women, and do not present any known alteration that may affect their fertility. Therefore, generally, their ovules are of high quality and this entails a greater probability of giving rise to good embryos, susceptible of implanting and allowing the evolution of pregnancy and the birth of a healthy child.

Percentage of ovodonation success

The success rates achieved by the donation of ovules are very good. According to the data obtained in the 2014 registry of the Spanish Fertility Society (SEF), the gestation rate by embryo transfer in the ovodonation cycles is 55.6%.

In the following attempts, the accumulated pregnancy rates can reach 90%.

These high success rates are due, among other causes, to the fact that the age of egg donors never exceeds 35 years, as this is stipulated by Spanish legislation. In fact, in many of the centers, age is restricted a little more to ensure good results and the limit for candidates is 30 years.

That is why, despite being a hard process from the ethical and emotional point of view, it is worthwhile because the success rates in most cases are higher than those obtained through IVF with own eggs.

For this reason, it is not necessary to request a donation of input ova, but each clinical case must be carefully studied and individualized for each patient. After carrying out the fertility study and the corresponding tests, the pathology must be diagnosed in order to be able to carry out the most suitable treatment for the couple that has attended the assisted reproduction center.
