What is endometrial scratching?

Endometrial scraping, technically known as endometrial scratching, is a simple surgical procedure in which small damage is caused to the inner wall of the uterus (the endometrium ) in order to regenerate and increase its receptivity.

Therefore, endometrial scratching is aimed at patients who do not achieve pregnancy due to repeated implantation failures , in which another more probable cause of infertility has not been found.

What is endometrial scraping?

The scratching of the endometrium is a light scraping of this mucous layer that covers the inside of the uterus and that is where the implantation of the embryo takes place.

What is intended with this is that the endometrium can regenerate properly, that increases its receptivity and that the probability of pregnancy in women is greater.

It is a new process that every day incorporate more assisted reproduction clinics due to its simplicity and good results.

Types

The procedure for endometrial scratching is very simple, lasts about 15-20 minutes and can be done by two techniques:

Hysteroscopy is a diagnostic test to visualize the inside of the uterus by introducing an optical system through the cervix. Once the specialist is assessing the uterine cavity, it can be used to scrape the walls of the uterus. Hysteroscopy has the advantage that polyps, adhesions or uterine malformations that could be interfering with embryonic implantation can also be found. Endometrial biopsy is a procedure very similar to embryo transfer after in vitro fertilization (IVF). A flexible catheter is passed through the cervix and the endometrium is gently scraped. To do the endometrial biopsy it is not necessary to apply anesthesia, as it is painless.

After the endometrial scraping, the woman can continue with her usual life, although it is common for a small bleeding to appear.

How is endometrial scratching done?

The most common is that the scratching is done by endometrial biopsy, although if the woman should have a hysteroscopy for other reasons, this technique would be used.
