Risk of clots after childbirth
The risk of blood clots remains elevated for 3 months after delivery, more than double what was thought. This is stated in the latest study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Causes
Pregnant women are more prone to blood clots due to the natural increase of clotting substances in the blood that are produced to avoid excessive bleeding during delivery.
These clots can cause strokes, heart attacks and other problems.
Strokes are quite unusual but devastating when they occur and fatal 10% of the time. Clots in the legs only cause pain, but they can be fatal if they go up into the lungs.
There is the idea that, once they have given birth, they no longer have to worry about clots. But the truth is that the risk persists for some time after delivery.
The study collected data on 1.7 million new mothers in California. Of those, 1015 developed blood clots, 248 had effusions, 47 heart attacks and 720 had clots in the legs or lungs.
The risk of having a clot was 11 times higher during the first six weeks after delivery and 2 times higher from week 7 to 12. After that, the risk is reduced to normal levels in the rest of the population.
symptom
The study authors recommend women who have just given birth to seek medical help immediately if they feel any of the following symptoms:
- Pain or pressure in the chest
- Breathing problems
- Swelling or pain in one leg
- Sudden and sudden headache
- Loss of vision, speech or balance
- Loss of strength on one side of the body
On the other hand remember that hypertension and smoking increase the risk of having clots.
