What are the indications of artificial insemination?
Artificial insemination (AI) is an assisted reproduction technique of low price and little complexity. However, it is not always possible to achieve pregnancy, since it is necessary to fulfill a series of requirements. For this reason, many wonder when it is recommended to do artificial insemination.
Depending on the problem of infertility and the circumstances of each patient, marital AI or AI with donor sperm will be indicated. In this article we explain it in detail.
Below you have an index with all the points that we will discuss in this article.

Indications of the IAC
The most common cases in which the IAC is usually performed are the following:
- Difficulties to maintain complete sexual relations such as the cases of retrograde ejaculation, erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, etc.
- Alterations of mild or moderate degree in some parameters of sperm quality such as mobility, morphology or concentration of sperm in the semen.
- Alterations of the ovarian cycle as irregularities of ovulation.
- Cervical factor or abnormalities in the cervix that complicate the passage of sperm from the vagina to the uterus.
- Mild or moderate endometriosis
- Sterility of unknown origin (EOD). This occurs when fertility tests, both in men and women, indicate normality and absence of problems, but even so, pregnancy does not occur.
- Immunological sterility. It arises due to incompatibility between the sperm and the female tract of the woman. If there are antisperm antibodies in the cervical mucus, the deposition of the semen directly in the uterus can prevent the attack by the defenses that the woman presents in the vagina.
A couple may suffer only one or more of these alterations. If they affect both members of the couple, we are faced with a case of sterility of mixed origin, because the inability to achieve pregnancy is caused both by problems in men and women.

Questions from users

If I have a permeable tube and the other obstructed, can I be a mother by artificial insemination?
By Andrea Rodrigo (embryologist). If at least one of the fallopian tubes is permeable, the sperm and the ovum can come into contact and allow fertilization. Therefore, pregnancy with a single fallopian tube is possible.
However, it is important to note that the probability of success is lower.
