Types of teratozoospermia: mild, moderate and severe
Teratozoospermia or teratospermia is a seminal disorder that involves having a high percentage of abnormally shaped sperm.
It is a cause of male infertility , whose severity will depend on the greater or lesser number of amorphous sperm in the semen.
Depending on the different criteria used to assess teratozoospermia, we can distinguish between 3 types: mild, moderate or severe.
Below you have an index with all the points that we will discuss in this article.

Classification of teratozoospermia
When a male performs a semengram to evaluate his seminal quality, in the results report he will obtain the values ??for all the seminal parameters, among which is the sperm morphology.
It is considered that a man has teratozoospermia when the percentage of sperm with normal morphology in his semen is less than 4%, according to the criteria established by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2010.
On the other hand, some laboratories also use strict Kruger criteria to diagnose teratozoospermia. According to Kruger, a male suffers from teratozoospermia when less than 15% of his sperm have a normal form.
Percentage of normal spermSince the reference value set by WHO is so low, it does not make much sense to talk about types of teratozoospermia depending on the amount of normal sperm. Therefore, for the classification of sperm in this sense, it is better to use the Kruger criterion, more strict than the previous one.
Mild teratozoospermia
A man has mild or light teratozoospermia when the number of normal sperm in his semen is between 14% and 10%.
The rest of the sperm will present some anomaly in its head, neck or tail. Despite this, men with mild teratospermia do not have a poor prognosis to achieve to have children.
If it were necessary to resort to assisted reproduction techniques to achieve pregnancy, it would be possible to do both artificial insemination (AI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF), depending on the concentration and sperm motility.
The shape of the sperm is important for fertilization of the ovum to take place. However, men with mild teratozoospermia can achieve a natural pregnancy.
In addition, there are several nutritional supplements with vitamins and antioxidants that help the maturation of sperm and that can improve their morphology.

Questions from users
Is severe teratozoospermia cured?
By Zaira Salvador (embriologist). If a man has less than 5% sperm with normal morphology, it is very difficult to recover a normal value with natural or pharmacological treatment. Yes, you could notice an improvement over time, especially if the man maintains a healthy lifestyle habits.
On the other hand, if the teratozoospermia appears associated with another pathology, such as varicocele, it is possible that the seminogram improves its parameters enough when undergoing surgery to eliminate the varicocele.
