Breast self-examination to detect breast cancer
Breast self-examination is essential to reveal any changes that occur in a woman's breast. It is especially important for the early detection of breast cancer. Some lumps do not have to be malignant, like myomas, but any alteration that is located should be referred to the gynecologist.
Below you have an index with all the points that we will discuss in this article.
IndexWhen to start?
It is advisable to perform breast self-examination once a month after the age of 20, right after the end of menstruation.
Women who have already passed the menopause can set any day a month.
Breast cancerThe first self-exploration we will do it carefully, to familiarize ourselves with the appearance and habitual consistency of the breasts, which will allow us in subsequent examinations to detect possible anomalies more easily.
The mammary glands have a nodular consistency so that initially you may have the feeling that you feel palps. It is convenient that in the first time a person who has experience, to teach us.
Steps of breast self-exploration
Step 1: Stand in front of a mirror with arms stretched along the body, and look at your breasts. Observe that they present the size, color, habitual shape and that no visible inflammations are appreciated.
If you notice any of the following alterations, notify your gynecologist:
- Dimple formation, wrinkles or lumps on the skin.
- Changing the position of a nipple or inverted nipple (it is inward instead of protruding)
- Redness, pain, rash or swelling
Step 2: Raise your arms and see if you see the same alterations.
Step 3: Squeeze the nipples a bit to see if you get liquid from any of them. It can be transparent, milky, yellowish or blood. In that case, go to the specialist.
Step 4: Lie down and palpate your breasts with your hands inverted, that is, the right breast with the left hand, and vice versa. Try to use a firm and deliberate touch with the tips of your fingers, keeping your fingers straight and together. The movement must be circular, approximately the size of a coin.
Explore the entire breast, from the clavicle to the upper abdomen, and from the armpit to the neckline. Follow some type of pattern to make sure you explore it completely, one very used is to move your fingers vertically, from top to bottom throughout the breast.
Self-examining the breastsTo be sure to feel all the breast tissue, exert a slight pressure to feel the superficial skin and tissue; a moderate pressure to reach the tissue located in the middle part of the breasts; and for deep tissue, firm pressure. When you reach the deep tissue you have to be able to feel the rib cage.
Step 5: Finally, explore yourself standing or sitting in the same way as in step 4. Many women prefer to feel their breasts when the skin is wet and slippery, so they do the exploration in the shower.
It is important to know that 90% of the lumps that are detected are benign tumors, which do not present a risk.
