A woman's ovarian reserve is related to her mother's menopause

The number of ovules a woman has affects her ability to conceive naturally. Both the number and the quality of the ovules decrease as the woman ages and this fact could be related to the age at which the mother reaches menopause.

In this way, it would be possible to predict the fertile life of a woman from hereditary patterns.

According to an investigation carried out in the University Hospital of Copenhagen (Denmark), if a woman reaches menopause before the age of 45, it is most likely that her daughter has a poor ovarian reserve. This study has been carried out on 500 women between 20 and 40 years old divided into 3 groups according to the age at which their mothers arrived at the end of their fertile period:

  • Early menopause: before 45 years old.
  • Normal menopause: between 46 and 54 years old.
  • Late menopause: from 55 years.
Biological clock

The levels of Antimülleriana Hormone (AMH) and the number of antral follicles were the methods of counting the number of ovules of the women, being obtained that these two parameters were remarkably smaller in women whose mothers had reached the menopause of precocious way, in comparison with the results obtained in women whose mothers had had menopause beyond the age of 55, taking into account other external factors such as smoking, age, use of contraceptives and the woman's Body Mass Index.

According to experts, this idea has yet to be proven in the long term, although the first investigations already point to a clear relationship between fertility and inheritance.
