What is implantation bleeding?

Embryo implantation

The implantation of the embryo is the process by which the fertilized ovule adheres to the endometrium to continue its development and lead to an evolutive pregnancy. Thanks to implantation, this embryo will be able to receive oxygen and nutrients from the mother via the blood during the next months of pregnancy.

The embryonic implantation begins on the seventh or eighth day of embryonic development, that is, after fertilization of the ovum by the sperm, and may last several days.

Embryonic development and implantation bleeding

For this embryonic implantation to occur, it is necessary that the endometrium of the mother be receptive, that the embryo is in a blastocyst state and that there is total synchrony between the two.

During the implantation process, the blastocyst invades the endometrium and breaks its blood vessels to form new ones that allow exchange with maternal blood through the placenta and the umbilical cord. The rupture of these small vessels of the endometrium causes implantation bleeding.

To know in detail what is and how embryo implantation occurs, you can access the following article: Embryonic implantation.

The embryo implantation takes place in the fourth week of pregnancy, at which time the production of the beta-hCG hormone begins and the pregnancy test can lead to a positive.

From this moment, there is an increase in the hormones related to pregnancy (beta-hCG and progesterone), which are responsible for the typical symptoms of pregnancy. These symptoms are not usually noticed until later, around the fifth or sixth week of gestation, although there are women who can begin to suffer them before.

How is implantation bleeding?

Implantation bleeding consists of a slight vaginal bleeding that occurs a few days after implantation. Sometimes, it is so scarce that it is called implantation staining.

The duration of implantation bleeding depends on each woman. Generally, it is something punctual, although it can last several days or a week with small intermittent stains.

Implantation bleeding is a symptom of pregnancy, since it occurs when the embryo penetrates and adheres to the endometrium, giving rise to an evolutionary gestation.

It should be noted that implantation bleeding does not always occur in all pregnancies. The most common is that the woman does not have any type of bleeding when pregnant.

As Dr. Silvia Jiménez tells us:

There are times when we see that a small preimplantation staining occurs sometimes, in others not. It is absolutely normal that nothing is noticed.
