Voluntary interruption of pregnancy in Spain: where to turn?

Since 2010 in Spain, women can decide to undergo an abortion freely and legally.

The voluntary interruption of pregnancy (IVE) is regulated by the Organic Law 2/2010 (law of terms), which states that a woman of legal age can abort of her own will before 14 weeks of gestation.

Where can I abort?

The woman who decides to undergo a voluntary interruption of pregnancy in Spain can do so in these two ways: in Social Security or in a private IVE clinic.

The difference between the two is obviously the price and, on the other hand, the waiting time.

It is advisable to go first to the family doctor to be referred to an accredited IVE clinic. However, women can also go directly to one of these centers if they wish.





How is abortion done?

Once the doctor has assessed the woman's medical history and calculated the weeks of pregnancy with the ultrasound, she will advise on the best method to perform the abortion.

If the pregnancy is already very advanced, a surgical abortion with anesthesia will necessarily be performed.
