Definition and mechanism of action

The active substance in Puregon is follitropin beta, which is the equivalent of the hormone FSH but obtained recombinantly by genetic engineering (FSH r) from Chinese hamster ovary cells.

At the beginning of each menstrual cycle in women, the hormone FSH increases to produce normal follicular growth and development in the ovaries. Next, follicular selection and the maturation of a single preovulatory follicle takes place. This will be the one that finally releases a mature ovule to the fallopian tubes so that it can be fertilized.

In an IVF cycle, it is intended to avoid follicular selection to stimulate multiple follicular development and achieve a greater number of mature ovules in the laboratory. This is achieved by continuous administration of FSH with medications such as Puregon.

It is also used in the treatment of women undergoing ovulation induction for scheduled intercourse or AI. In these cases the required dose will be lower since it is not necessary to increase the number of mature ovules.
