What is Menopur?

It is a drug made up of human menopausal gonadotropin (HMG) or menotropin extracted from the purification of urine from menopausal women. It contains two main hormones:

  • Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH)
  • Luteinizing hormone (LH)

Due mainly to its hormonal composition, its administration can lead to different side effects. In addition, effects related to the form of administration may also arise, since it is given subcutaneously through daily injections.

Below we detail the possible adverse effects.

Possible effects when taking Menopur

The effects derived from the administration of menopur vary between women and not only in the effect itself but also in the intensity or severity with which it appears.

The most prominent side effects that have been detected are:

  • Ovarian hyperstimulation: occurs when the ovary responds in an exaggerated way to medication with high levels of ovarian activity. It would only be especially dangerous if the hormone hCG is subsequently administered to induce ovulation, since the ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome could be triggered. Nowadays different tools allow to control and avoid the appearance of this syndrome.
  • Multiple pregnancies: They occur more often than in natural ovulation cycles in which hormone medication is not administered.
  • Reaction at the injection site: Redness, pain, swelling and itching may appear in the area where the injection is given.
  • Nausea and vomiting: not usual but may appear occasionally.
  • Hypersensitivity and fever reactions: Occurs in isolated cases.
  • Formation of antibodies that inactivate the treatment when it lasts a long period of time: it happens in very rare cases.
  • Abdominal and head pain
  • Allergic reaction that can lead to rash, itching, swelling of the throat and / or respiratory complications.
  • Decrease in the amount of urine
  • Slight weight gain

In addition, it may increase the risk of venous or arterial thromboembolic effects in women with risk factors for thromboembolic disease such as severe obesity or thrombophilia. There has also been an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy in women with tubal disease or congenital malformations.

When Menopur should not be used

To avoid possible harmful effects to the health it is fundamental to monitor the ovarian response to this medication.

Greater ovarian activity

It is recommended to follow the doctor's instructions and not to administer menopur in case of being allergic or hypersensitive to menotropin or any of its other components (lactose, sodium hydroxide, polysorbate 20, hydrochloric acid, sodium chloride, diluted hydrochloric acid and water).

It is also not advisable to use Menopur when the woman is in the following situations:

  • Presence of uterine, ovarian, breast or other hormone-dependent tumors
  • In cases of increased ovaries or cysts not caused by PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome)
  • Malformation of the sexual organs that make natural pregnancy impossible
  • Vaginal bleeding of unknown origin
  • Presence of uterine fibroids
  • During pregnancy and lactation
  • Early menopause
