Menopause in women: when it occurs and what symptoms it has

Climacteric or menopause?

The climacteric is a stage in a woman's life in which she goes from a reproductive to a non-reproductive state. During this time, the ovaries begin to fail in the maturation of ovules and ovarian exhaustion occurs, which is also associated with the decrease of estrogen.

The climacteric is often confused with menopause. However, menopause only refers to the last menstruation of women, a fact that occurs within the climacteric.

While the climacteric is a transient process that takes several years, menopause is a one-time event.

Normally, the climacteric begins about 5 years before the menopause and lasts until the age of 70, when the stage known as senility begins.

On the other hand, menopause can appear at an age between 45 and 55 years and, at this precise moment, the woman's ovaries stop working. The average age of menopause is 51 years.

Phases of the climacteric

The climacteric is a physiological and normal process in the life of the woman.

Since ovarian function is decreasing slowly and progressively, it is possible to differentiate 3 phases within the climacteric:

Perimenopause begins about 2-3 years before menopause and ends one year after having the last menstrual period. In this period is when menstrual cycles are altered and the first symptoms of menopause appear. Minopause consists in the total cessation of menstruation once the woman has accumulated more than 12 months without menstrual bleeding. This represents the end of the reproductive life. Postmenopause is the post-menopausal stage and lasts longer, from 10 to 20 years. During this time, cardiovascular, endocrine alterations and pathologies such as osteoporosis may appear.Penomental climates in women
