Ultrasound in the first trimester

That is why the diagnosis of congenital anomalies is increasingly moving towards ultrasound during the first trimester of pregnancy, hence it is an increasingly important technique that allows, in addition to the classic indications such as:

  • know the number of fetuses
  • date gestation
  • assess the coexistence of gynecological pathology,
Fetal diagnosis

Determine other parameters that are no less important and equally informative, such as:

  • the evaluation of the fetal anatomy
  • the detection of future diseases (preeclampsia ...)

Advantages of the technique

This technique achieves a potential benefit from two points of view since, on the one hand, it is possible to know early the existence of possible fetal malformations, which can interrupt the pregnancy more safely, or perform fetal surgery in those cases that is necessary; and on the other, it allows obtaining a psychological benefit in pregnant women who have previously had a child with malformations and who can be informed about the normality in the fetal anatomy of their future child.

This ultrasound during the first trimester of pregnancy is not a substitute in any case of the morphological ultrasound performed at 20 weeks of pregnancy.

In more advanced stages of pregnancy, continuous work is being done to identify markers of disease during the third trimester and in this sense, Doppler study of the uterine arteries during the first trimester would provide the additional advantage of being able to establish early therapeutics with aspirin before of the process of placentation, since therapy beyond 16 weeks has not been effective.
