These lesions can appear as a consequence of an infection of the human papilloma virus (HPV), which is considered to be a sexually transmitted disease or STD. It can be detected by a gynecological review, observed directly or after reading the cytology.

For what and how is it done?

This operation has two main objectives:

  • Treating lesions that may develop in a future uterine cancer, premalignant lesions are removed to avoid problems in the future, acting as a preventive method against cancer.
  • It is also used to make a definitive diagnosis of the lesion, ruling out the existence of uterine cancer at an early stage.

The intervention is relatively simple and does not require hospital admission. There are two modalities, with local anesthesia and the most common, with mild general anesthesia. After spending a few hours and checking that the patient has reacted well to the intervention and has eliminated the anesthesia, she can leave the center.

Advice for the patient

Depending on how the intervention is performed, the preoperative conditions vary. If conization is performed under local anesthesia, fasting is not necessary. While when general anesthesia is used, it is necessary to fast in the 8 hours prior to the intervention.

Once the conization is done, it is recommended:

  • After the intervention, stay between 3 and 4 days at rest.
  • Limit physical activity for two weeks.
  • Do not have sex for 4 weeks.
  • Consult the doctor if there are abundant vaginal bleeding or an abundant and odorous vaginal discharge. It is normal a little vaginal bleeding after the intervention, or the disappearance of the flow in the days after the intervention.
