Aspirin and prevention of preeclampsia

Preeclampsia is an alteration of the placenta that affects 5% of pregnant women, which is characterized by a rise in blood pressure due to pregnancy, which can cause a slow growth of the fetus and cause problems in different organs in the mother.

There is a gradation of levels of preeclampsia, mild levels disappear at the end of pregnancy, after delivery, but sometimes can cause the need to cause a premature delivery because of the danger for the mother to maintain pregnancy.

Below you have an index with all the points that we will discuss in this article.

The consumption of drugs in pregnant women is very restricted, due to the effects on development, known or not, that different medications can have on the fetus.

What does aspirin do in pregnancy?

Aspirin, whose active ingredient is acetylsalicylic acid is not recommended during pregnancy because it causes an increased risk of bleeding, both for the mother and for the fetus. A group of experts has raised voices in favor of its use in pregnant women at risk of developing preeclampsia.

The US Preventive Task Force is an independent American organization formed by a team of experts who systematically evaluate the efficiency of the recommendations given for the prevention of diseases.

This group of experts has found that the consumption of daily infant aspirin after week 12 of pregnancy could benefit pregnancy in women at high risk of developing preeclampsia. This conclusion supports the recommendation issued by a major association of American gynecologists a year earlier.

For the application of the drug to be beneficial, two conditions have to be fulfilled: that the aspirin treatment starts at weeks 12 to 14 of pregnancy, since it has been seen that after week 20 it lacks effectiveness, and the other condition is that a previous screening is necessary to determine to which woman this treatment should be indicated.

Take aspirin in pregnancy

Women at high risk will be those who have suffered preeclampsia in a previous pregnancy. Among other factors, hypertension, family history and obesity are indicative of the possible development of preeclampsia.

The origin of preeclampsia can be due to multiple factors, and according to Dr. Josep María Laílla, president of the Spanish Society of Gynecology and Obstetrics (SEGO), the origin of preeclampsia due to vascular alteration is the one that can be avoided with the treatment with aspirin.

In no case should this recommendation be put into practice without the supervision of the doctor in charge of monitoring the pregnancy, and it can exclusively be a benefit for those women who are at risk of raising the blood pressure due to pregnancy to values ??that could cause problems in the mother and in the correct fetal development.
