A mathematical method to optimize embryo selection

The traditional observation of the embryos gives way to the incubation time-lapse, with a coupled camera that takes serial images of the development of the embryo, while maintaining the variables of the atmosphere of the embryo much more controlled by avoiding having to remove it from the incubator for observation under the microscope.

Below you have an index with all the points that we will discuss in this article.

A mathematical method to optimize embryo selection

A new methodology employs a mathematical algorithm, based on the analysis of the division rhythm of the first embryonic divisions, is able to dictate a feasibility potential of the embryo on day 3 of development, helping the specialist to choose which embryo to transfer.

The system called Eeva makes serial photographs in the first days of the embryo's life. Later, thanks to a computer program, it calculates the probability of developing correctly that the embryos have, and their results help to decide the biologist in the choice of which embryo to transfer to the recipient.

The Assisted Reproduction Regulatory Societies approve using this method

The Eeva method was approved for commercialization in June 2012, but until now it has not been introduced in the American clinics, although it has been in its Canadian neighbors since 2013. The QuirĂ³n Clinic in Zaragoza has implemented it among its offered treatments, because it considers that presents a great clinical value that would help the decision making of the biologist based on the quality of the embryo.

It is the only test supported by scientific studies that combines the capture of images with the prediction of the development potential of the embryo thanks to a specific software. Recent studies defend its effectiveness in increasing the probability of selecting embryos without numerical chromosomal alterations.

How much is the use of this tool worth in an in vitro fertilization treatment?

This system has been on sale in the European Union since 2012 and in Canada since 2013. According to the president of Auxogyn, Lissa Goldenstein, in the United Kingdom patients pay the equivalent of about 930 euros for the use of Eeva in the clinics of fertility.

Eeva efficiency

The effectiveness of Eeva was validated in a multicenter study with 54 countries, and its results presented at the ESHRE (European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology) in Istanbul in 2012.

Eeva predicted the formation of blastocysts, from observation and mathematical analysis until day 3 of division with 85% success. It reduced to 15% the cases in which on day 3 the embryo morphologically had good appearance and it seemed that it would evolve favorably but it did not.

The use of the time-lapse incubation technique and mathematical analysis combined with the inestimable morphological evaluation carried out by the embryologist, raises the implantation rates by increasing the factors to be considered in order to assess the quality of the embryo.
