What is mayer syndrome

Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome is known by its acronym in English as MRKHS or, simply, as Rokitansky syndrome.

This pathology is also called müllerian agenesis or Müllerian hypoplasia, since it is due to a defect during the development of the Müllerian ducts that form the uterus, the fallopian tubes and the vagina in embryogenesis.

Women who suffer from Rokitansky syndrome may have problems to have sex if they do not develop the vagina, in addition to the trauma for some not being able to have children. Therefore, it will be necessary to adopt some measures to improve the quality of life of these women.

Below you have an index with all the points that we will discuss in this article.

What is Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome?

MRKH syndrome and absence of uterus

Rokitansky syndrome is a congenital disorder of the female reproductive system that affects 1 in every 5,000 women in the world. These women are already born without a uterus and without fallopian tubes. As for the vagina, depending on the degree of affection, may have total absence or part of it.

The Müllerian agenesis implies the absence of vagina, uterus and fallopian tubes in women, but with functional ovaries.

The causes of Rokitansky syndrome are not known in depth. It is due to a failure in early embryonic development, on weeks 4 and 12 of gestation. The Müllerian ducts of the female fetus do not develop and, as a consequence, the uterus, tubes and vagina do not form properly.

The ovaries, on the other hand, develop from a structure different from Müller's ducts and, therefore, have a normal shape and are functional.
