Engagement of the baby in the pelvis
In the weeks before delivery, the child descends and is placed in the birth canal, which can be reflected in a heavier pelvis accompanied by greater ease of breathing of the pregnant woman by releasing pressure from the rib cage.
Detachment of mucous plug
Between the 4th and 6th week of pregnancy, the cervix begins to secrete a very dense mucosa called the mucous plug, which seals the entrance to the uterus and which will act to protect the fetus from infections and which allows sexual intercourse to be carried away. without risk for the future baby, as long as the pregnancy has a normal development.
The detachment of this stopper is a reflection of the closeness to delivery, although it does not have to be a sign of imminent delivery, in fact it is possible to detach weeks before the end of pregnancy. The plug is seen as a very thick and viscous flow that can have a transparent, yellowish and even slightly bloody, because on its way to the vaginal opening can break some blood capillary, but do not worry. Nor should it be confused with the generally denser flow that the pregnant woman experiences during her entire pregnancy.
If the removal of the mucous plug is not accompanied by contractions or breakage of water, it is not necessary for the pregnant woman to go to the hospital. In the final stretch of pregnancy, the cervix becomes a little thinner and there may be a slight dilation, caused by some sporadic contractions, which facilitates the detachment of the plug, but does not mean that the birth is triggered immediately. If the plug is accompanied by heavy bleeding, you should go to the emergency room immediately.
True contractions
During pregnancy there may be sporadic contractions that are called "Braxton Hills" contractions, they may begin to occur from the 6th week of pregnancy, although not all pregnant women have to feel them, and they become more frequent as the pregnancy progresses. They are usually irregular, infrequent and without associated pain. In the case in which, before the 37th week is over, there are more than 4 contractions per hour, it is necessary to be informed to the gynecologist to assess the risk of premature birth.
As the time of delivery approaches, Braxton Hills contractions may increase in frequency and vary their rhythm, but they do not increase in duration or intensity, which means that we are facing false labor.
The true contractions are identified because they increase progressively in frequency, intensity and duration (the frequency is measured from the start of a contraction until the next one begins). At the beginning of labor, contractions will occur every 10 minutes and as you go forward, the time between them will be shortened and their intensity will not be reduced.
