Donation of breast milk in SpainAlthough milk donation is still a recent practice, the volume of donated milk increases every year and there are already 166 active milk banks in Europe.
Bank of milkBreast milk banks
Many Spanish mothers donate milk that is stored in seven banks of breast milk throughout the country. This is used to feed babies who can not be fed by their own mothers.
It is useful in case of premature babies whose mothers are not prepared to generate milk. Also in cases of some pathology of the mother or the newborn that prevents breastfeeding directly.

The WHO recommends it as a second option
According to the World Health Organization donated breast milk is the second best option to feed a newborn, after the mother's own milk. Even though the donated milk is pasteurized and loses nutritional and immunological value, it is still a very good option.
The profile of women donors is usually that of young women, between 25 and 38 years old, healthy, with university studies and working within the health, educational and social assistance field.
Bottle feedingMilk banks demand funding to manage collection systems that keep milk frozen through refrigeration chains. Some of them still do not have collection service at home and it is the women themselves who move to deliver their milk.
The secretary of the Association of Banks of Human Milk has indicated that, although the Spanish milk banks are coming little by little to the situation of the Europeans, it is necessary to publicize the activity of these centers since many pediatric specialists are unaware of the services that these centers provide.
