Contraceptive methods during breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is a period of ovarian rest in women, during pregnancy, and after delivery if you choose to breastfeed the newborn, the cessation of the menstrual cycle is maintained, the ovaries remain dormant and hormonal cycles are not produced typical of the fertile stage of women.

During breastfeeding, the body maintains that ovarian inactivity to avoid pregnancy while the baby is nursing, it is a natural contraceptive regulation. This latency of the ovaries is given by the high concentration of the hormone prolactin, which is secreted during lactation and has a positive self-regulation by sucking the child's nipple.

Below you have an index with all the points that we will discuss in this article.

Contraceptive methods during breastfeeding

Natural methods of contraception in breastfeeding

Prolactin inhibits the hormone GnRH, gonadotropin-releasing hormone, and its absence prevents the secretion of FSH, follicle-stimulating hormone and LH, luteinizing hormone, the hormones responsible for the maturation of follicles in the ovaries.

Prolactin, whose peaks are very intense during the first months of lactation, decreases its intensity over time and this reduction becomes much more pronounced at the time when breastfeeding goes from being exclusive to combining with other foods.

When the prolactin peaks are spaced, the hormone GnRH works again, causing ovulation. Therefore, the contraceptive reliability of the nursing period is not total, and if you want to have sexual relations it is of interest to know those compatible with breastfeeding.

Dr. Nadia Caroppo, gynecologist specializing in assisted reproduction, explains this whole process of hormonal regulation in the following video:

If contraception is desired without the use of physical barriers, it is necessary that the composition of the contraceptive does not affect the production of breast milk or is harmful to the infant.

Minipill

It is a daily pill that inhibits ovulation and thickens the cervical mucus, preventing the passage of sperm. It contains gestagens exclusively and does not affect the production of milk, so it is safe for the baby. Its effectiveness is somewhat lower than the pill combined with estrogen, and mild bleeding can occur.

Subdermic implant

It consists of a rod of about four centimeters that is implanted under the skin of the forearm, contains only gestagens, and is gradually releasing the hormone, protecting from pregnancy for 3 years. The implant can be implanted during the breastfeeding period.

Quarterly injection

It is an injection that lasts 12 weeks and contains progesterone.

Hormone-releasing IUD

It is a device that is placed in the uterus and secretes levonorgestrel, a synthetic form of progesterone. Its insertion can be done after 6 weeks of delivery, not before. It has advantages over the conventional copper IUD, such as lighter and even non-existent rules.
