In industrialized countries such as Spain, the sterility rate is 5-10% higher than in the rest of the world according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Specifically, in our country, one in six couples of reproductive age have problems when conceiving.
The reasons for this increase are complex to analyze since in many cases there may be factors that affect both members of the couple.
There are also other reasons why, more and more, women come to the consultation of a specialist in assisted reproduction in Spain: we refer to single mothers and lesbian women.

Causes of infertility in Spain
A couple has fertility problems when they do not get the pregnancy after a year of having intimate relationships without contraceptive protection. This time can be reduced to 6 months if the woman has advanced maternal age (over 35 years).
Mainly, there are two reasons why the rate of infertility in our country has increased:
- Higher percentage of male factor.
- Social changes: insertion of women in the workplace and delayed motherhood.
Undoubtedly, the age of the woman is the most outstanding cause of sterility in Spain. Delaying motherhood causes an ovarian aging that results in a reduction in the number of eggs and poorer quality. Advanced maternal age is also reflected in a higher abortion rate due to the increase of genetic alterations in the ovules.
Causes of infertility in SpainOther causes of sterility highlighted are the following:
- Male infertility
- Pathologies in the uterus or fallopian tubes
- Anovulation
- Problems in the cervix
- Hormonal alterations
- Unknown origin
Finally, it is important to point out that the habits of life of our society such as tobacco and alcohol, environmental pollution, chemical products, etc., also affect fertility.
