What is salpingitis? - Causes, symptoms and treatment

Pelvic inflammatory disease

It is known as pelvic inflammatory disease to inflammation and infection of the upper genital tract. It can affect:

  • Endometrium (endometritis)
  • Myometrium (myometritis)
  • Fallopian tubes (salpingitis)
  • Ovaries (oophoritis)
  • Parametrios (parametritis)
  • Pelvic peritoneum (pelviperitonitis)

It is caused by bacteria in the vagina or cervix that ascend to any of these structures and cause an infection. The most common are chlamydia (Chlamydia trachomatis) and gonorrhea (Neisseria gonorrhoeae), which are sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

In addition, infection by one of these pathogens increases the transmissivity of HIV and other STDs.

Types of salpingitis

Two main types of salpingitis can be differentiated:

  • Acute salpingitis: it has the worst symptoms (fever, acute pain in the lower part, etc.).
  • Chronic salpingitis: it can go unnoticed (asymptomatic) and the occasions when it manifests are usually after the menstrual period.

Depending on whether it affects one tube or both, a distinction is made between unilateral and bilateral salpingitis, respectively. Approximately in 60% of cases it is bilateral, that is, the two tubes are altered.
