What is an ovarian cyst?
Follicular cyst, is that follicle that fails to open and release an egg during the menstrual cycle, so that the fluid remains inside the follicle and forms a cyst.
Another type of cyst, called a corpus luteum cyst, occurs after an egg has been released from a follicle. It often contains a small amount of blood. Ovarian cysts are relatively common and occur more frequently during a woman's fertile years (from puberty to menopause). These cysts are less common after menopause.
No known risk factors have been found. Functional ovarian cysts are different have nothing to do with ovarian tumors.

Reasons to remove an ovarian cyst
Cysts in women who are still having periods are more likely to disappear. There is a higher risk of cancer in postmenopausal women.
An ovarian cyst may need to be removed if:
- Is big
- It is solid (does not contain only liquid)
- It causes pain
- It is believed to be a cancer (less likely if you are a young person)

Take into account the age of the woman
- The treatment of benign ovarian tumors is salpingo-oophorectomy (surgical removal of affected ovaries and fallopian tubes).
- In young women, and in all those who are interested in reproductive function, the gynecologist will perform a careful removal of the cyst or tumor with posterior reconstruction of the ovary, whenever possible.
- In pre or postmenopausal patients, the entire matrix will be removed along with the two ovaries and fallopian tubes.

Complications after surgery
Although no procedure is free of risk, complications are rare. If any, these can be: Infection, reappearance of the cyst after the removal, bleeding, need to remove one or both ovaries, blood clots, damage to other organs and infertility.
The fertility of a woman who has had ovarian cysts removed will depend on the functionality with which the ovaries have been operated.
