Azoospermia is the total absence of sperm in the ejaculate. Depending on the cause, we distinguish between obstructive or secretory azoospermia. The prognosis to achieve pregnancy in each case will be different: in the first, sperm can be obtained by testicular biopsy and be used in an ICSI, but in the second it will be more difficult to obtain them and it may be necessary to resort to donor sperm to perform the treatment of assisted reproduction.

Azoospermia and varicocele

The relationship between azoospermia and varicocele is quite common: azoospermia occurs in 5% of cases of varicocele. However, for this to happen, the varicocele must be very severe.

In secretory azoospermic patients who have corrected their varicocele by surgery (varicocelectomy), 50% recovery of testicular tissue has been achieved and sperm motility in the ejaculate is recovered in 55% of cases.
