Risks of in vitro fertilization: what problems can arise?
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a complex treatment of assisted reproduction that in recent years has allowed the birth of thousands of children in women or couples with fertility problems.
In spite of this, it is possible that women who undergo an IVF have a higher risk of suffering some complications during the process or once the pregnancy has been achieved.
In particular, the main problems associated with IVF are due to hormonal ovarian stimulation and intrauterine transfer of embryos.
Below you have an index with all the points that we will discuss in this article.

Ovarian stimulation
Controlled ovarian stimulation consists in the administration of hormonal drugs to cause multiple follicular development in the ovaries of women.
If the normal thing in a menstrual cycle is to develop a follicle that gives rise to a mature ovule, with hormonal medication it is intended to obtain several ovules that can be fertilized with the aim of increasing the probability of pregnancy.
However, both the administration of hormones and the intervention to extract mature ovules (follicular puncture) have certain risks that a woman should know before starting an IVF:
Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome is a very high response of the ovaries to hormonal medication. Many follicles develop, the ovaries grow excessively and, after ovulation, the fluid contained in the follicles can pass into the abdominal cavity. The symptoms of this are pain and swelling, nausea, diarrhea, weight gain, etc. In more severe cases, ascites, tachycardia and difficulty breathing may occur. Risks of ovule extraction ovarian puncture is a simple surgical procedure that is done with sedation. The possible side effects of anesthesia are a little discomfort, dizziness or pressure drop, but nothing more serious. On the other hand, a complication that may arise during puncture is damage to the organs of the pelvis, which can cause bleeding or an infection. Complications that may arise in an IVFAs gynecologist Valeria Sotelo explains in the interview with the IMFER clinic about ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome:
The most important symptoms are nausea, vomiting, bloating and abdominal pain.
Normally, it is a picture that over time may be improving, but there are cases that can become serious between 7 and 10 days after the administration of hCG, which is human chorionic gonadotrophin.
