Percentage of success of artificial insemination of donor

The results of artificial insemination (AI) with donor semen depend to a large extent on the age of the woman and her reproductive conditions. Despite the good quality of sperm, the probability of achieving pregnancy in women over 35 is low.

Below you have an index with all the points that we will discuss in this article.

Percentage of successful artificial insemination of donor

With age, the woman loses reproductive potential due to the decrease in the ovarian reserve and the increase in the probability of chromosomal alterations in the ovules. This makes the fertilization and subsequent implantation of the embryo more complicated.

The probability of pregnancy decreases with age

For artificial insemination can allow pregnancy, it is necessary that the woman has permeable tubes and normal ovulatory cycles. In addition, it is important that you respond appropriately to ovarian stimulation treatment.

In addition to age, there are other factors involved in the success of AI:

  • the cause of your infertility
  • the thickness of your endometrium
  • the treatment used in the stimulation of ovulation
  • REM (mobile sperm count) of thawed semen

For all this, the pregnancy rate when applying artificial insemination can vary from 16% to 20% per insemination cycle.

Result of several IAD attempts

Although the pregnancy rate of the first AI process is similar to that of natural pregnancy, the likelihood of success increases considerably in subsequent attempts. It is what is known as the cumulative rate.

Success rate of artificial insemination after several attempts

As we see in the image, from the first to the fourth attempt of artificial insemination, the probability of success rises significantly:

  • With 1 cycle: 17-28% pregnancy rate
  • With 2 cycles: 30-46% pregnancy rate
  • With 3 cycles: 48-60% pregnancy rate
  • With 4 cycles: 60-75% pregnancy rate

For this reason, after the failure of the artificial insemination, it is recommended to make a new attempt consecutively, since this way it is more probable that the gestation is achieved.

After the fourth attempt, the probability of obtaining a positive result in the pregnancy test after artificial insemination are very low so it is recommended to move to another reproductive technique: in vitro fertilization (IVF).
