The period of time from the day after delivery until the first menstruation is known as the puerperium. Its duration depends on many things, among others, the time of breastfeeding. During the period of lactation the level of prolactin (hormone that stimulates the production of breast milk) increases rapidly. This blocks the secretion of FSH which would stimulate the ovaries. That is why in most cases infertility is maintained during the time that full breastfeeding lasts.

During breastfeeding the growth of the follicles is blocked for a minimum of 12 weeks from delivery. Infants resume their fertility between the third and eighth month. This will depend on the amount of time the mother breast, as well as the intensity of each blowjob. While women who, on the contrary, do not breastfeed, have more hormonal control and may return their fertility very soon, between 4 and 8 weeks.
