Marijuana and male infertility

There is a study that has determined that when a man consumes marijuana relatively frequently, the energy expenditure of his sperm is greater, that is, they need more energy to be able to reach the egg and fertilize it. This energetic descent causes the spermatic movement to slow down and prevents the sperm from fertilizing the egg.

The scientific journal Cell has published the study, which has been conducted at the University of California in San Francisco and directed by researcher Yuriy.

Energy to reach the ovule

Sperm are the sex cells of man and its main function is to fertilize the egg, which is 10,000 times larger than them so to be able to join it they need a great energy supply, since they have to cross the membranes that protect the inside the ovule.

Effect of cannabinoids

The internal pH of the sperm is fundamental for its activity and changes when the sperm are in the female reproductive system, since the membrane channel opens and produces physiological changes in the sperm that activate its movement. The cellular channel through which the protons pass has been discovered, they have called it "pore Hv1". This membrane channel allows the passage of protons, causing the change in pH commented.

Endocannabinoids are lipids produced by the body naturally and are found in high concentrations around the egg. These substances activate the cannabinoid receptors, the main component of marijuana.

One of the endocannabinoids found in the male and female reproductive systems is called anandamide. Dr. Kirichok comments that anandamide can produce physiological changes in male reproductive cells.

The consumption of marijuana and its effect on fertility

The cannabinoids, active components contained in this drug, alter the physiology of sperm in the reproductive tract of the male, causing them to spend excess resources. When they reach the reproductive tract of women they show very low levels of energy to perform their movement, especially in the final stretch in which having a good contribution is essential to be able to cross the egg, fertilize it and achieve pregnancy.

For all this explained above, marijuana use has been linked to male infertility and decreased chances of pregnancy, being a possible cause of failure in the search for pregnancy.

Do not forget that, according to some studies, the use of marijuana by women can also cause sperm to have a slower movement in its path through the female reproductive tract. On the other hand, there are also studies that relate the consumption of marijuana in women with the risk of ectopic pregnancy.
