Male sterility by sperm factor: causes and treatments

Causes

During spermatogenesis (the process of sperm formation), a series of failures or errors can occur that lead to the production of altered sperm, either in its morphology, concentration or mobility.

Any failure in the quality of the semen can hinder or prevent the fertilization of the ovule and, therefore, pregnancy can not be achieved naturally. Therefore, these alterations in sperm are a cause of male sterility.

However, thanks to assisted reproduction techniques, men with fertility problems can be biological parents. With the progress of these treatments, both the number of sperm required and the mobility of them are no longer determining factors to achieve pregnancy.

Thanks to the emergence of intracytoplasmic sperm microinjection (ICSI), many men with infertility due to severe sperm factor can be parents today.

The seminal parameters used to diagnose these alterations are those published by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2010. The test used to analyze them is the semengram, also called spermogram or spermiogram.

In the case of not having any alteration in the seminal parameters, we will speak of normozoospermia. In the opposite case, one of the pathologies mentioned in the following section will be diagnosed.
