How is the delivery date calculated?
From a series of simple mathematical operations, the delivery date can be roughly predicted, this arithmetic rule is used by gynecologists based on the data provided by the pregnant woman.
Below you have an index with all the points that we will discuss in this article.

How is the delivery date calculated? The date of the last menstruation (FUM) is the most important data to calculate how long the woman has been pregnant, so that this date is reliable and the calculation can be made from it, it is necessary that the following requirements are met:
- The patient must have waited for the period and remembered the exact day of the last menstruation.
- The three previous menstrual cycles must be normal.
- The woman can not have taken contraceptives in the previous 3 months.
- Not having found breastfeeding at that time.
Calculation of gestational age
The time of pregnancy, or gestational age is expressed in weeks and through the following mathematical rule can be calculated, it is important that the entire month has elapsed: Number of months of pregnancy multiplied by four and adding 2, 3 or 4 depending on whether you are in the 1st, 2nd or 3rd trimester of pregnancy.
For example: 5 months of pregnancy x 4 = 20 + 3 = 23 weeks of gestation.
- In the first trimester of pregnancy, 2 must be added.
- In the second quarter, 3 are added.
- In the third trimester of pregnancy, 4 are added.

Calculation of the date of delivery (FPP)
There are several methods to calculate the probable date of delivery, the most used now is the Naegele rule, which consists of adding to the date of the last menstrual period (FUM), seven days, and the month in which the FUM occurred. three months remain and then a year is added if necessary. It would be as follows:
- To find out the day: FUM + 7 days.
- To calculate the month: Month of the FUM - 3 months.
- If necessary, add up one year.
Example: last menstruation date 06/15/2012, the delivery date (FPP) will be March 22, 2013.
- Day: 15 + 7 = 22 days.
- Month: 6 - 3 = 3 (March).
- Year: 2012 + 1 = 2013.
