How does the mother's advanced age influence pregnancy?

Although the preservation of fertility, through ovarian vitrification, and the donation of ovules make it possible to delay motherhood, it is important to bear in mind that advanced maternal age can increase problems in pregnancy and childbirth. In addition, the older the woman is, the more risks it takes to become pregnant.

Below you have an index with all the points that we will discuss in this article.

How does the mother's advanced age influence pregnancy?

Advanced maternal age and fertility

Today, there is a tendency to delay motherhood due to socioeconomic issues. Among other reasons, the insertion of women in the labor market and the methods available to control motherhood have caused, in recent years, a significant increase in the number of pregnancies in women over 35 years.

Biologically there has not been this evolution and fertility is still limited by age. This means that, from the physiological point of view, advanced maternal age is considered from the age of 35-40 years.

The years mainly affect the ovarian reserve, since both the quality and quantity of the ovules are progressively reduced over time.

One of the most frequent alterations in the ovules of older women is the increase in the incidence of aneuploidies. This means that your oocytes are more likely not to have the correct chromosomal charge, which means that it is more difficult to achieve pregnancy and that the risk of abortion is greater.

What options does assisted reproduction offer?

In order to correct these problems, reproductive medicine offers two options:

  • Social preservation of fertility: it consists of freezing the ovules when you are younger (20-30 years) to be able to use them later, when you want to be a mother and it is no longer possible with the ova available in the ovary at that moment.
  • Donation of ovules or embryos: in cases where it is not possible to achieve pregnancy with the oocytes themselves, donated oocytes or embryos can be used.
Options to avoid the consequences of age on the quality of the ovules

These alternatives are viable because the receptivity of the endometrium (that is, the ability of an embryo to implant in it) is not so influenced by the years. In spite of that, as we will detail below, it must be borne in mind that carrying out a gestation at an advanced age carries more obstetric risks.

Delayed maternity and pregnancy

Advanced maternal age is a risk factor, both during pregnancy and during delivery.

We must not forget that pregnancy is a special physiological state, with a strong hormonal variation and, therefore, is not exempt from possible complications or risks.

With age, the body loses firmness, strength and ability. This causes that the answers of it before special situations, like the changes of the pregnancy, are not so suitable or bearable in comparison with the answer of the body to earlier ages.
