Being a single mother: possible treatments with donor sperm

More and more women are single mothers by choice. In Spain, a woman can have a child without a partner thanks to pregnancy through techniques of assisted reproduction with semen donation or adoption.

To achieve pregnancy, donor semen is used, either in artificial insemination or in vitro fertilization. If necessary, ovules from a donor or the adoption of embryos can also be used.

The reproductive center specialist will request a female fertility test to decide the most appropriate treatment for each particular case.

Below you have an index with all the points that we will discuss in this article.

Being a single mother: possible treatments with donor sperm

Home insemination

The homemade insemination consists of the woman inseminating in her house, with the semen of a donor that she has bought from an accredited semen bank. It is a very popular method that single women can use to have a child.

It is important that the woman take into account that this is not an assisted reproduction technique, since it is not carried out with intervention or medical assistance.

Therefore, the probability of pregnancy is similar to that of a natural pregnancy and will depend both on whether it is performed at the right time and on the correct handling of the sample.

Artificial insemination for single mothers

A woman can be a single mother by artificial insemination with donor sperm (IAD) in an assisted reproduction center. To do this, you must have a good ovarian reserve and the fallopian tubes must allow the passage of the sperm for the fertilization of the ovule.

The steps will be the following:

  • Soft ovarian stimulation by hormonal medication
  • Ultrasound and estrogen analysis to assess the maturation of the ovules
  • Induction of ovulation with hormonal medication
  • Introduction of semen into the uterus through a cannula

The semen will be from an anonymous donor, as required by Spanish legislation in assisted reproduction treatments. The fertility clinic will be responsible for choosing a donor whose physical and immunological characteristics are as similar as possible to those of the woman.

Adoption of embryos

It is a cheaper alternative to the double donation of gametes. It is an option available when a woman can not use her own eggs to have a child.

This reproductive method consists in using the surplus embryos from in vitro fertilization treatments of other women or couples.

These are frozen in liquid nitrogen, so you simply have to thaw them and transfer them to the uterus. The process would be the following:

  • Preparation of the endometrium with hormonal medication
  • Defrosting of embryos
  • Embryo transfer to the woman's uterus

As with the donation of oocytes and semen, the donation is anonymous. The fertility center chooses the embryos based on the immunological and physical characteristics of the couple or woman who has donated them to match those of the future mother.
