Teratozoospermia: definition, causes, types and treatments

Teratozoospermia, also known as teratospermia, is an alteration that affects male semen in which the great majority of spermatozoa present an abnormal morphology.

Therefore, teratospermia is considered a cause of male sterility due to a sperm factor and its origin is diverse, sometimes even unknown.

There are several treatments to be able to have a child with teratozoospermic sperm depending on whether the semen of the male presents other spermatic alterations or not, such as, for example, concentration or mobility.

Below you have an index with all the points that we will discuss in this article.

Teratozoospermia: definition, causes, types and treatments

What is teratozoospermia?

Teratospermia is defined as the bad morphology of the sperm, either by presenting defects in its head, intermediate piece or tail.

According to the criteria of the World Health Organization (WHO) of the year 2010, a man presents teratozoospermia when more than 96% of his sperm have a strange or abnormal morphology.

A man with a minimum of 4% normal form sperm has no fertility problems and could get a pregnancy naturally without any problem.

The sperm count with good or bad morphology is done with the diagnostic test called seminogram, in which it is possible to stain and visualize the structure of the sperm under the microscope.

There are some laboratories that also include the strict criteria of Kruger in addition to those of the WHO in the result of the semengram.

According to Kruger, a man suffers from teratozoospermia if the semen presents more than 85% of amorphous sperm. Therefore, the Kruger criteria are much more severe than those of the WHO.

In other words, the minimum reference to consider that man is fertile is found in a value equal to or greater than 15% of normal form sperm, instead of the 4% currently stipulated by WHO.

If nothing is specified in the laboratory report, the parameters dictated by the WHO in 2010 and not the strict Kruger criteria are taken as reference.

How to get pregnant

A man with teratospermia could lead to a natural pregnancy without problems if the rest of the seminal parameters such as concentration and mobility are not altered.

However, in cases where pregnancy is delayed, it is possible to follow some medical recommendations to try to recover the good sperm morphology.

On the other hand, if the teratospermia has a genetic cause or is congenital, it will be more difficult to find a treatment that can be effective to cure it.
