Seminogram with mobile sperm count (rem)
The semengram is a male fertility test to assess semen quality. In some occasions, this seminal analysis includes the REM or mobile sperm count, which allows us to make a sperm count with progressive mobility that exists in the sample and therefore determine more accurately if the semen is good or bad.
Below you have an index with all the points that we will discuss in this article.

In order to obtain the REM value, the ejaculate goes through a process that allows the separation of the semen sample in two fractions:
- On the one hand, a high quality sperm concentrate. This will be the part that we will analyze and the one that will be used in case of carrying out a reproductive technique.
- On the other hand, seminal plasma with immobile sperm and non-sperm cells that may be in the ejaculate (epithelial cells, leukocytes ...) This fraction will be discarded.
This process is called training and therefore the semengram or REM test is known in some cases as a test of sperm capacitation. Next we will see the different training techniques used.
Sperm training
Naturally, the sperm, as they move through the female reproductive tract to reach the egg, they undergo a process known as training.
In this procedure, the seminal plasma is released and the sperm undergo a series of physical and chemical changes that give them the ability to fertilize the ovum, leaving behind those sperm that does not show this ability.
One of the variations is hyperactivation, that is, the ability to move faster and more vigorously.
Spermatozoa with progressive mobilityWhen we are going to perform a technique of assisted reproduction we must train the semen in the laboratory imitating what happened naturally. Therefore, performing REM sperm in the study of male fertility can be of great help to check the qualities of the seminal sample after being trained and can determine which reproductive technique is more convenient.
You can read more information about this process in this link: Semen training.

Questions from users
What are the differences between REM and the semengram?
In a normal semengram, the quality of the semen is analyzed without it having undergone any process of sperm capacitation. Simply study different seminal parameters (mobility, morphology, concentration, volume, etc.) after obtaining the sample by ejaculation.
If, in addition to this study, we perform a mobile sperm count after having trained the seminal sample, we speak of semen analysis + REM or simply REM test.
