Gonal-f: dose, prices and administration for IVF

Composition and presentation

Gonal-f is composed of recombinant FSH, a hormone whose function is to promote the growth and development of ovarian follicles. However, the hormone that contains Gonal-f is not of human origin as in the case of Menopur, but has been obtained by genetic engineering techniques in the laboratory. The active substance in Gonal-f is follitropin alfa.

Gonal-f is marketed in different types and each of them consists of a specific composition.

The main difference between each type of Gonal-f is the amount in micrograms of follitropin alfa, since it is different depending on the FSH activity that is desired to be administered during the treatment. The possible application doses of Gonal-f are:

  • Gonal-f 75: 5.5 micrograms of follitropin alfa, equivalent to 75 international units in 0.5 ml of solution.
  • Gonal-f 300: 22 micrograms equivalent to 300 IU in 0.5 ml.
  • Gonal-f 450: 33 micrograms of active principle in 0.75 ml.
  • Gonal-f 900: each feather dose provides 900 IU, equivalent to 66 micrograms, in 1.5 ml.
  • Gonal-f 1050: 77 micrograms of follitropin alfa in 1.75 ml, equivalent to 1050 IU.

Indications of use

The use of Gonal-f is indicated in the following cases:

  • Anovulation: both in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) and those who have not achieved ovulation with clomiphene citrate or letrozole.
  • Ovarian stimulation: induce follicular growth in women undergoing assisted reproduction techniques.
  • Hypogonadotropic hypogonadism: the application of Gonal, in this case, aims to stimulate sperm production in men with problems, both acquired and congenital, in the process of spermatogenesis.

Posology of Gonal-f

The dose in which Gonal-f is applied depends on the type of treatment for which it has been prescribed, since the same response is not sought in the case of artificial insemination than in an IVF / ICSI treatment.
