Success in assisted reproduction
There are different rates that measure success in assisted reproduction, the most frequent is to measure the pregnancy or pregnancy rate, but there is also a birth rate or live birth rate. So when comparing statistics between centers, it is important to know exactly what rate is being referenced. In addition to how that rate has been obtained, if for each cycle started, each puncture or transfer.
Below you have an index with all the points that we will discuss in this article.
Index
Success in assisted reproduction- 1. Pregnancy rate with artificial insemination
- 1.1. Insemination with semen of the couple
- 1.2. Artificial insemination with donor semen (IAD)
- 2. Pregnancy rate with IVF
- 2.1. IVF with own eggs
- 2.2. IVF with ovodonation
- 2.3. IVF with semen donation
In the different countries there is usually an annual report with the results that occur in the reproductive centers, this registration may be mandatory or optional, in which case not all assisted reproduction clinics will be represented.
Pregnancy rates depending on the techniqueIn Spain there is a registry of the SEF (Spanish Fertility Society) that annually collects the results of most reproductive clinics and that from the results report of 2014 will become mandatory.
Pregnancy rate with artificial insemination
The data in this article are based on the report of the SEF 2013 registry, the last one published to date. There may be variations from one year to the next, but these are usually not great. Next, the results with the main techniques of assisted reproduction will be described.
Insemination with semen of the couple
Artificial insemination (AI) is not usually recommended in women over 37 years of age due to its low efficacy. For this reason it is so important to take into account the age when assessing the success of the technique.
- Women under 40 years: 12.7% pregnancy rate.
- Women of 40 years or more: 9.8% pregnancy rate.
Artificial insemination with donor semen (IAD)
When using donor sperm, the possibility of achieving pregnancy is a little higher, since donors must have an exceptional seminal quality to be accepted.
- Women under 40 years: 22.0% pregnancy rate.
- Women of 40 years or more: 13.0% pregnancy rate.
In addition, it has been shown that the chances of pregnancy increase if more than one cycle is performed, which is why it is said that artificial insemination has a cumulative success rate. This benefit is observed regardless of the origin of the seminal sample. In general, for IAC and IAD, we would obtain:
- With 1 cycle: 12-23% pregnancy rate.
- With 2 cycles: 23-29% pregnancy rate.
- With 3 cycles: 30-36% pregnancy rate.
- With 4 cycles: 37-45% pregnancy rate.
Pregnancy rate with IVF
IVF is a technique with greater intervention of the specialist, it is indicated before more serious alterations of the fertility or repeated failures of insemination. You can use both semen and donor eggs if necessary.
The mentioned rate is the pregnancy rate per transfer.
IVF with own eggs
- Women under 35 years: 44.2% pregnancy rate.
- Women from 35 to 39 years old: 36.2% pregnancy rate.
- Women with 40 years of age or older: 24.3% pregnancy rate.
IVF with ovodonation
In this type of cycle the age of the woman is not as important, since the ovules are from a young and healthy donor.
The general rate that is reported is 55.9% pregnancy rate per transfer.
IVF with semen donation
With either donor eggs or donor eggs, the gestation rate when using a donor semen sample is 42.2%.
