Intermenstrual bleeding

It is a characteristic bleeding different from menstrual bleeding but also coming from the uterus. It is a fairly common problem, especially in adolescents and women who are in the perimenopause stage. It is in fact, the second cause of consultation with the gynecologist preceded by infections of the vaginal and cervical area.

It is usual that the use of hormonal contraceptives cause, especially in the first cycles, irregular bleeding. Do not be alarmed by this, since irregularities usually disappear with the passage of cycles. In these cases it is important to take adequate contraception to avoid disorders and bleeding out of time.

Causes of intermenstrual bleeding

There are several reasons why you can sag between a rule and the later. We detail the most common:

  • Uterine cancer or other areas of the female reproductive system.
  • Uterine myomas, that is, the presence of non-cancerous (benign) tumors
  • Endometrial hyperplasia: is due to excessive proliferation of endometrial cells, usually as a result of abnormally high levels of estrogen or decreased levels of progesterone.
  • Endometriosis
  • Cervicitis: inflammation or infection of the cervix.
  • Abortion or threat of abortion. The woman may suffer from bleeding without knowing that she is pregnant.
  • Hormonal changes: variations in estrogen levels either by internal problems (such as hypothyroidism) or by the administration of contraceptives.
Use of contraceptives
  • Ectopic or extrauterine pregnancy.
  • Injuries or vaginal diseases: alterations in the vaginal opening caused by sexual intercourse, infections, genital warts, polyp, ulcers, insertion of extraneous objects, etc.
  • Coagulation problems as well as abuse of anticoagulant drugs or Aspirin.
  • Use of the IUD
  • Stress or certain conflicting emotional situations can cause ovulatory dysfunction

Spotting or bleeding in ovulation

We understand by spotting the small bleeding or drip that occurs between one menstruation and another as a cause of ovulation. It is a sign that ovulation is taking place.

Some women stain slightly during the days of ovulation due to increased estrogen. In addition, this light spotting can be accompanied by small discomfort similar to menstrual pain.

Diagnosis and treatment

In the first place it is important to determine that the bleeding comes from the vagina and not from another nearby area such as the rectal or urinary tract. To do this, a tampon will be placed in the vaginal cavity to confirm the source of bleeding. However, in case of suffering intermenstrual vaginal bleeding on a regular basis, it is advisable to consult a gynecologist.

Vaginal bleeding between periods

The doctor will review the patient's medical history and analyze the type and frequency of bleeding. In addition, he will perform a physical study, blood test, pregnancy test and Pap test to determine the cause and be able to give the best treatment.

Depending on the cause of the bleeding, one treatment or another will be given:

  • Medication, to treat hormonal imbalances or infections.
  • Contraceptives Change the contraceptive guideline to one that best suits your needs, with a greater or lesser concentration of estrogens and / or progesterone
  • Surgery to treat endometriosis, polyps or fibroids. Dilation or curettage can be the treatment to remove remnants of a miscarriage that can cause bleeding.

In cases of cancer, surgery, chemotherapy and / or radiotherapy will be the treatment of choice.
