Donation of altruistic or remunerated ovulesWhat does Spanish law say?
It is important to note that in no case is it a sale of gametes but a compensation for the effort made by donors, thus following the regulation 14/2006 on techniques of assisted human reproduction.
Economic compensation for gamete donationThis law establishes several aspects in this regard:
- The donation of gametes is not lucrative or commercial
- The financial compensatory compensation is given to compensate only the physical discomfort and the expenses of commuting and working that can be derived from the donation
- Financial compensation can not be understood as an economic incentive for which to donate
- The promotion of the donation must respect the altruistic nature and therefore the economic benefits or compensation can not be used as a reason to encourage the donation.
- The compensation given to the donors will be set by the Ministry of Health and Consumption, following a report from the National Commission on Assisted Human Reproduction, and should be reviewed periodically, guaranteeing respect for the charitable nature of the donation.
The economic compensation currently established is between 800 and 1000 euros for egg donors and between 40 and 60 euros per semen sample for male donors.
Why is compensation given to the donor?
The gratification in the case of the woman is greater because the process is more complex than the donation of sperm, which also supposes a greater risk.
The woman is first subjected to a phase of ovarian stimulation by hormonal medication to develop more eggs than usual. Next, these ovules are extracted in the so-called follicular puncture, a short-term surgical procedure performed under sedation.
Risk of ovum donationStimulation can lead to complications such as ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome and the intervention, although it is simple, is not without risk.
In addition, throughout the stimulation process, the woman must go on a regular basis to gynecological examinations. This implies a greater number of visits to the clinic, that is, greater displacements and absences from work.

The man on the other hand, should only go to the clinic and deposit a sample approximately every week for about two or three months. The sample is obtained by masturbation after about 3-5 days of sexual abstinence.
