However, it is worth noting that selling eggs is legally prohibited, so the money received is an economic reward for the inconvenience caused by the donation, not the gametes themselves.

What is the financial compensation for donating eggs?

How much do they pay to donate eggs?

Law 14/2006, of May 26, on techniques of assisted human reproduction regulates the procedures of reproductive medicine that are carried out in Spain.

Among other things, this law specifies that the donation of eggs and semen must be voluntary, anonymous and free, so that the sale of gametes is legally prohibited.

The gratification by the donation is given exclusively by the possible risks and the annoyances that can suffer the donors.

In other words, the compensation received by egg and semen donors is not due to the gametes but by the expenses and effort of the continuous visits to the fertility clinic for the necessary controls and tests, the losses labor costs, travel expenses, etc.

In the case of women, the amount varies between 800 and 1000 euros. Instead, sperm donors receive between 40 and 60 euros for each semen they deposit at the clinic or fertility center.

Donation of formal and supportive ova

The exact amount, as well as the specific conditions of the donation, are established by each assisted reproduction clinic.

Why do they pay so little?

As indicated in Law 14/2006, the donation must be of an altruistic nature. It is therefore stipulated that donors can not receive large amounts of money for the donation. In this way, it is clear that the donation of gametes is an act with altruistic character.

The purpose of this is to avoid that the donation is made for a lucrative purpose or that the economic compensation becomes the only motivation.

Obviously, financial compensation is part of the motivation of donors. However, the desire to help people who need to use ova or sperm from others to be able to have children should be the main reason, since the amount set does not represent a high economic benefit.

Why is there compensation?

The financial compensation of egg donors is greater than that given by the donation of semen. The main reasons for this are the differences between one process and another, as we see below:

  • In egg donation, women receive hormonal medication (ovarian stimulation) for about 10-12 days, which poses some risk. For example, there is the possibility of suffering from ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), allergy, fatigue, heaviness, etc.
  • Egg donation requires numerous visits to the fertility clinic during the weeks of hormone treatment to control the response to it and the evolution of follicular development. This involves several trips to the clinic, with the time and costs involved. In addition, it can lead to labor losses.
  • In order to obtain the eggs, in addition to ovarian stimulation, a surgical intervention is necessary, although it is short and simple, it does not imply a risk, since it is done under anesthesia. It is the so-called follicular puncture.
    • Financial compensation for the egg donor

On the other hand, for the donation of semen, the donor should only go once a week to the clinic to deposit the sample obtained by masturbation, usually in the center itself. Therefore, it involves fewer risks and discomfort.

      Risks of egg donation

Before initiating treatment to donate eggs, it is important to know that the process has a number of possible associated risks and to be aware of the consequences that may be involved.

On the one hand, we find the problems derived from the medication needed to obtain the eggs: ovarian stimulation. It can cause swelling and abdominal pain, tiredness, allergies, mood swings ... In the most severe cases, ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome may appear, but it is rare.

On the other hand, ovarian puncture, the intervention to obtain the eggs, also carries a series of risks, like any surgical process in which anesthesia is given. In addition, it can cause infections and bleeding.

Nor should we forget the psychological aspects of donating oocytes. Once the ova have been assigned to a recipient and they have been fertilized, the donation will be irreversible. One must be aware of this and, before becoming involved in a donation program, assess whether one is emotionally prepared for everything involved in ovodonation.

      User questions

Will they pay me more if they get many eggs?

No. As we have commented, it is not a sale of eggs, but a compensation for the inconvenience caused. Therefore, the economic reward must be the same regardless of the number of eggs obtained.

Do all cities pay the same?

The amount of money donated to donors is legally regulated at the state level, but because no exact amount is stipulated, there are variations among clinics.
