Basic requirements for artificial insemination

Artificial insemination (AI) is one of the simplest assisted reproduction techniques and therefore is generally the first option in the face of a fertility problem.

Next you have an index with all the points that we are going to treat in this article.

Basic requirements for artificial insemination

However, in order to be able to apply it with the possibility of pregnancy, it is necessary to study whether the following requirements are met:

  • Permeability of the fallopian tubes
  • Good seminal quality, especially in relation to the mobility and concentration of spermatozoa .
  • Age of the patient younger than 37 years
  • Good ovarian reserve (quantity and quality of ova)

If these requirements are not followed, another reproductive technique such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) will be chosen, since the chances of success of artificial insemination in these cases are very low.

In order to be able to verify whether or not the conditions necessary to achieve gestation through artificial insemination are fulfilled, a series of fertility tests will be performed on both men and women. Below we detail the main factors analyzed.

Egg and sperm union

In artificial insemination, the fertilization of the ovum by the spermatozoa occurs in the fallopian tubes of the female reproductive organ. Therefore, it is essential that the tubes are functional and allow passage through.

The ovule, after ovulation, travels to the tubes and is waiting for the spermatozoon. This is deposited in the woman's uterus artificially, but must travel alone to the ovum. If the tubes are blocked, egg and sperm can never be united and therefore pregnancy will not occur.

To verify the tubal functionality three techniques can be performed:

  • Hysterosalpingography: this is a radiological study of the female reproductive system thanks to the injection of a contrast liquid through the vagina.
  • Hysterosonography: a saline fluid is introduced through the cervix that allows observation of the uterus and the fallopian tubes in real time by ultrasound.
  • Laparoscopy: examination of the abdominal cavity through a small incision and through a laparoscope.

The first is the most common, while the latter is done in specific cases because it is a surgical intervention.

Fertilization of the ovum in the fallopian tubes

In addition to this, the woman must perform a series of hormonal tests on certain days of her menstrual period. This study of hormones along with a series of vaginal ultrasounds allow to evaluate the ovarian reserve and the function of the menstrual cycle.

It will also be necessary to study the presence of uterine malformation that could prevent the fertilization, implantation or development of pregnancy.

Serologies of both partners should be performed to confirm that there is no risk of hepatitis B, hepatitis C, HIV, rubella, toxoplasmosis, or syphilis that could be transmitted to the prospective child.

Quality of semen

As for the man, a complete seminogram with a REM study (mobile sperm count) should be performed to check if the quality of the semen is sufficient to allow pregnancy.

As we have said, although artificial insemination is a small external aid for fertilization, after depositing the semen, the spermatozoa must be able to reach the egg without any help. Therefore, it is essential that they have good mobility and concentration.

After sperm training, REM should equal or exceed 3 million sperm and progressive rectilinear mobility should exceed 15%.

If the only requirement that is not met refers to the quality of the semen, an artificial insemination with donor semen or directly to the IVF can be chosen.

Prices of AI

Artificial insemination is one of the most economical treatments for assisted reproduction. Therefore, it is the most chosen option for a first attempt as long as the basic requirements of age, seminal quality and tubal functionality are met.

The cost of the AI ??varies depending on the center but is usually for 600-1,000 ?. In case you have to resort to a sperm donor, such as single mothers for example, the price is increased to 900-1,400 ?. This is due to the financial compensation needed by the donor.

In some clinics there is the option of getting lower AI prices after a second or third attempt.

In Assisted Reproduction ORG we have agreements with different Spanish clinics to offer you the treatment you need at the best price. In addition, you have at your disposal a first visit to go to inform you of everything without commitment.

User questions

What are the requirements for artificial insemination in Social Security?

The requirements of artificial insemination technique are the same regardless of whether it is done in a private reproductive clinic or in a public center.

The only requirement of Social Security is that the couple does not have a previous child in common, but this condition is not unique to artificial insemination but to any process of assisted reproduction.

Are there any special requirements for single mothers?

No, a single woman who wants to be a mother must have a good ovarian reserve and permeable fallopian tubes to be able to seek pregnancy through artificial insemination with donation of semen.

The quality of donor sperm is excellent so it will meet the requirements set for artificial insemination.
