Obese mothers, sick children?

In previous occasions we have addressed the issue of the influence of maternal obesity in the achievement and monitoring of pregnancy, but today we want to focus on what consequences may have for the child born, and the adult who will become, having been subjected to a pregnancy with excess BMI. An adult woman is considered obese if she has a body mass index greater than 30.

According to the World Health Organization, 1400 million people over 20 were overweight in 2008, and of these, 200 million men and nearly 300 million women were obese. Cases of obesity have multiplied worldwide since 1980.

Below you have an index with all the points that we will discuss in this article.

Risks

A recent study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) indicates that children of obese mothers are more at risk of dying prematurely as adults. According to the researchers, the risk of premature death increases 35% among adults born to obese mothers and 11% in the case of overweight mothers, compared to those born to mothers with a normal weight (BMI between 18.5 and 29, 9).

Obesity in pregnancy

Also, it seems that adults born to obese mothers are more likely to be hospitalized for cardiovascular problems (angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, stroke ...)

"It is necessary to urgently create intervention strategies to optimize weight before pregnancy," the authors of this study insist.

As suggested by a group of researchers at the Yale University School of Medicine, the obesity of mothers could lead to infertility in future daughters. This is based on the fact that obese women have low levels of the hormone ghrelin and could program the fetal development of the uterus in daughters of obese women. These results have been obtained in experiments with mice, and require further depth.

Dr. Paula Krakowiak, of the MIND Institute at the University of California, and her colleagues concluded that maternal obesity is linked to a greater likelihood that the child is diagnosed with a disorder within the spectrum of autism or a delay in its development. development at the age of five.

What do I do if I am obese or overweight?

One out of every five women begins their pregnancy with overweight, and their nutrition must be controlled under medical supervision. But much better if we save the possible problems, do not you think the same?

To pursue reproductive success, specialists advocate taking "lifestyle therapy" measures in the first place, which consists of changing habits for healthier ones in order to reduce the weight that is giving very good results and that only in extreme cases in which this measure fails (if within a reasonable time, about 6 months have not been achieved to reduce the weight by 10%) should address the problem with intragastric surgery.

The specialist will recommend changing the lifestyle for a healthier one

Both the conception and the development of pregnancy are favored in a recipient with normal weight (BMI between 19 and 28), and recent studies find evidence of possible conditions of a person gestated in conditions of overpressure, but it is the invaluable criterion of the specialist in reproduction that, after a careful analysis of the case and the circumstances, will determine if there are risks in achieving pregnancy and what is the best strategy to achieve a healthy and beautiful child at home.
